Early June witnessed the posting of an anti-Muslim billboard visible from I-465. The group responsible remains anonymous. Especially coming during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, the billboard is offensive to many more Hoosiers than only Muslims. The Center for Interfaith Cooperation and other religious groups issued statements condemning the billboard as a symptom of a more general incivility that threatens our community. Friday June 9 CIC organized a press conference at the Indiana Interchurch Center that allowed religious leaders a chance to explain why this billboard is so harmful.
Graduate students from IUPUI’s School for Public and Environmental Affairs continued the conversation on Tuesday June 13 when they worked with CIC to organize a “Forum of Neighbors: Billboards, Walls, and Bridges.” WRTV-6 covered the conversation.
